Heard a loud "Boom," and the car suddenly felt rear heavy -steering got super light
-If I hit a pothole I didn't see one
- Upon further inspection driver's side rear suspension somehow collapsed
-Suspension on that side feels wrong in some way
-I suspect a rotten out strut tower, although I can't get at them well enough to see their condition
-anybody have any ideas/comments on what may have happened?
Above is normal gap
this is the side that's bad

Snapped spring? My 2000 Volvo v40 had a snapped spring AND bent strut. Felt like a sports car in the handling department until it got fixed though.

if its rotten tower you can inspect that from inside the car, behind some carpetting or plastic panel.
could be a broken sway bar or the actual strut/spring? suggest taking wheel of and looking. Do not suggest attempting to drive home without looking first.

if you bounce the rear, does it bounce straight? or wiggle?

Not knowing how Subie's are sprung, my uneducated guess would be a snapped coil spring. Does it feel like that corner is still suspended, or does it feel like it's bottomed?

McPherson strut. Guessing by the vintage, it's probably strut rear. Subarus occasionally break springs.

My guess would be broken spring. Subarus occasionally break springs and the best way to check would be to Jack it up and peek.

I'm leaning towards wiggle

I want to say it's still suspended. Almost feels as if the car had air suspension and one corner was leaking badly

but the left side still bounces? probably collapsed strut, maybe bushings.

Since they use Mac struts on the rear, It is either a broken spring or a failure of the end retaining pieces. You can see the lower and most of the spring from under the car. The upper most part needs to be accessed from inside the car. There is a cover in the back that exposes the upper mount of the strut. YouTube.

Thank you that's exactly what I needed. The spring looked fine when I quickly glanced under the car, I'm betting it's going to be one of the retaining pieces

Thank you all for your replies, broken Spring seems to be the likely culprit. Guess I'm somewhat of a noob for not coming up with that, but I wouldn't have thought of it without you guys. So thanks, you're all what makes this the best forum on the internet
